Maredsous Benedictine Abbey was founded in the Molignée Valley in 1872. Maredsous beer first began being brewed in 1947 after many pilgrims to the abbey arrived thirsty. To improve the beer, Duvel began licensing and producing the beer in Flanders in 1963, though the abbey opened a small microbrewery of its own in 2023 to celebrate 75 years of brewing. Gruyère was the cheese of choice with this beer, and it worked delightfully well.
Crisp and golden in colour, this beer also had a large bubble bath head that lingered in the glass. The aroma was lovely, with wheat, lemon zest, herbs and honey all blending wonderfully together. These all followed into the taste, with a low-lying bitterness forming on the back of the tongue a few seconds after swallowing. The body was medium, as was the carbonation.
This was clean and extremely well-made blonde beer. Maredsous have a reputation of being a world-class brewery and this is another example of that. If you’re looking for a replacement to a standard pale lager, then this could be the perfect choice.
