Style: RTD (ready to drink) mixed spirit
Producer: Wet City Spirits
While researching this tasting, I was surprised by how limited the selection of ready-made gin and tonic drinks was in Systembolaget. I knew that I wanted one in the tasting though, as I wanted something that could be easily packed for a picnic or taken to the beach. In the end, I went for this blend from Wet City, which is Gothenburg’s first organic distillery. As well as a range of gin, they also produce mescal, aquavit and vermouth. This is their ready to drink gin drink, mixed using elderflower infused tonic. This is produced using dry gin, with no sweeteners added to the mix. I was a bit worried about how this might taste, but this was a lot better than I expected!
The mix was colourless, as you would expect with a traditional gin and tonic combo, and the body appeared to be quite thick. The elderflower aroma came through nicely, with the hits of juniper from the gin still noticeable above the tonic aromas. With fair carbonation, this was smooth and easy to drink, with a dash of floral sweetness in the aftertaste. It wasn’t overpowering or too cloying on the palate, and I really enjoyed this. I doubt it will impress gin and tonic purists, but I think this would be a convenient alternative for barbecues and parties, with a good price to boot. An easy and tasty start to the gin section of the tasting.
