CBS (Canadian Breakfast Stout) was born when Founders opted to put some of their award-winning KBS imperial stout into maple barrels to age. This has been brewed with coffee and chocolate, and made using Oats, roasted barley and chocolate malts then finished with Nugget and Willamette hops. 100/100 on Ratebeer and currently ranked as 11th best stout and 32nd best beer in the world. With such high scores, I was hoping for big things from this beer, and I was not disappointed!
This had a deep dark chocolate colour with a thick espresso head that held for a surprisingly long time. The body was thick as you would expect with a nearly 12% imperial stout, with the sticky film coating the glass. The aroma was amazing, with massive oak, milk chocolate, coffee grounds and maple syrup notes exploding from the glass, with a subtle note of chilli backing those, but that may have been from the alcohol. The taste was exquisite, with milk chocolate, maple syrup and toffee at the forefront, with a light wood edge creeping through slowly in the aftertaste.
This is a masterclass in beer, with massive aromas and flavours exploding from the glass, yet it was still very easy to drink. This was amazing, and I understand why this is ranked as a world-class beer! Don’t let the price tag put you off from experiencing one of the best beers being produced today.
