The Trappist monastery De Koningshoeven brewery was founded in 1884. The monastery is located in Onze Lieve Vrouw van Koningshoeven in Tilburg, and they have been brewing beer under the name La Trappe since the 1980s. La Trappe Collaboration was produced with two other Trappist breweries: Tynt Meadow from England and Zundert from the Netherlands. The proceeds from this beer will be used to plant 14,000 trees in partnership with the Dutch charity Trees for All. This beer worked wonderfully with some well smoked cheddar, with the hint of smoke working well with the bold malt notes.

The colour was wonderful, with a blend of dark chocolate brown and amber, all finished off with a hint of dark red. The aroma was sweet yet delicate, with brown sugar, dried fruit and caramel all noted instantly. The taste followed the aroma, with the raisins blending wonderfully with the toffee, brown sugar and warm malts. The alcohol was noticed but never harsh, creating a lovely warmth in the chest when swallowed. The carbonation was fair to medium, with a medium thick body supporting the heavy flavours. The aftertaste was again warming, and left the mouth slightly sticky, but not overly so.

This was an absolutely amazing beer, and I wish I had bought a couple of bottles for myself. One of these breweries on their own would be great, but together they’ve truly made a world-class beer. If you ever get the chance to find this beer, make sure you give it a go because you will never be disappointed.
