The original Nyköping Bryggeri was founded in 1885 and expanded steadily until it was acquired by Pripps in 1969 and subsequently closed. Today, the former brewery building serves as a cultural and arts centre. Modern-day Nyköping Brewing was established in 2017, with its brewpub and restaurant opening three years later in 2020. This particular beer is a collaboration with Bottenvikens Bryggeri, based in Luleå. As a fan of Scotch Ales, I was eager to give this one a try, and I’m pleased to say it did not disappoint.

In the glass, it poured a deep chocolate brown with ruby highlights and was topped by a beige head that faded fairly quickly. The aroma was rich and inviting, bursting with notes of dark rye bread, raisins and burnt caramel that combined beautifully. Those dark rye bread characteristics immediately carried through into the flavour, joined by hints of dates and milk chocolate. As the beer developed, a sweet coffee note emerged in the finish, leaving behind a gently roasted character that lingered pleasantly on the palate. The alcohol was remarkably well integrated, providing only a subtle warming sensation that complemented the darker malt flavours.

This was an excellent Scotch Ale, packed with bold aromas and flavours while remaining highly drinkable. Every sip seemed to reveal something new, making it a thoroughly enjoyable beer from start to finish. A real pleasure to try.
