Hantverksbryggeriet is based in Västerås and has been brewing beer since 2003. In addition to its beer range, the brewery also produces its own soft drinks and apple beverages. Baronen is a seasonal barley wine release that is also available in a barrel-aged version, with honey, sugar, and raisins added during production to enhance its body, sweetness, and complexity. Barley wine originated in England during the 18th and 19th centuries as a strong, age-worthy ale intended to rival the strength and sophistication of wine, with the term first being used commercially by Bass Brewery in 1870. I’m pleased to say that Baronen is an excellent example of the style.

The beer poured a deep coffee-brown colour with a beige head that left a coating of foam around the inside of the glass. The aroma immediately showcased its rich sweetness, with notes of liquorice, brown sugar, and treacle standing out prominently. On the palate, sweet liquorice led the way before giving way to flavours of toasted bread, figs, and milk chocolate. The body was full and luxurious, carrying the flavours long after each sip and leaving a lingering sweetness on the palate. The alcohol provided a gentle warming sensation without ever overwhelming the beer’s rich flavour profile, while the relatively low carbonation felt entirely appropriate for the style.

Quite simply, this was delicious. The bold flavours combined beautifully, creating a beer that felt both complex and wonderfully balanced. Every element worked in harmony, making for a highly enjoyable drinking experience. If you’re a fan of barley wines, this is certainly one to seek out.
