Apex Brewing Company is based in Nora and has earned a reputation as one of Sweden’s premier IPA producers, particularly renowned for its bold and expressive hazy IPAs. That expertise is clearly on display in Metatron, which features a complex hop bill including Nelson Sauvin, Enigma, Vic Secret, and Riwaka. While the Double IPA style is generally credited to California’s Blind Pig Brewery in 1994, the hazy interpretation rose to prominence during the craft beer boom of the early 2010s.

Metatron poured a striking opaque yellow colour, crowned by a thick, fluffy white head that lingered impressively throughout the glass. The aroma was immediately inviting, bursting with notes of mango, pineapple, grapefruit, and resinous pine. From the first sip, the beer delivered an intense wave of tropical fruit flavours, with ripe mango, creamy pineapple, dragon fruit, honey, and fruit cake all combining beautifully. A firm bitterness provided structure and balance, preventing the sweetness from becoming overwhelming. The body was rich and substantial, supported by a moderate level of carbonation that suited the style perfectly. The finish was particularly memorable, with lingering melon and tropical fruit notes remaining long after each sip.

Apex’s reputation as one of Sweden’s finest IPA breweries is well deserved, and Metatron only strengthens that claim. Packed with flavour, wonderfully balanced, and highly drinkable for its strength, this is an outstanding hazy Double IPA. If you’re a fan of the style, it’s well worth seeking out.
