Amundsen Bryggeri is a craft brewery based in Oslo, Norway, founded in 2011 and known for its massive range of NEIPA, sours and imperial stouts. This is a pastry sour that showcases the brewery’s experimental approach and is brewed with barley malt, wheat malt, oats, hops, yeast, lactose, raspberry, and mango. I have had countless Amundsen beers in my tastings over the years as they are a consistently great brewer, but would this match their incredibly high standards? To be honest, I’m not sure that it did.
This had a hazy blood orange red colour with a thick head that disappeared rather quickly. It seemed to be quite heavy in body as well. The aroma was powerful, with massive raspberry, cranberry, cream and sweet overripe mango notes all vying for attention. The mango pulled through a lot more in the taste, but still the red fruit lingered. It had a rather high carbonation that was evident on the tongue. A pie crust note was left on the palate after swallowing combined with almond, dry red fruit and pineapple. The one thing that left me down slightly though was the mouthfeel, as it was not as thick as I had hoped for.
This was a nice sour, but it honestly didn’t blow me away. A slightly thicker body would have helped to support the fruit notes more but that isn’t the biggest complaint in the world. All in all, its a good beers that maybe doesn’t reach the heights of Amundsens other beers.
