Ability Brewing is based in Malmö and brews under the Malmö Brewing name. This is part of a range of sours created focused on a particular fruit, with cherry, raspberry, and blueberry also in the range. There was hardly any information about this beer online to research, so I had to go into this one blind.
This poured a deep, hazy ruby-red colour with a lovely shine and medium body. The head had a touch of pink to it, but it disappeared rather rapidly. The aroma was vibrant, with sharp blackcurrant alongside citrus notes, especially lemon. A cranberry note was also detected. When tasted, the tangy blackcurrant acidity was first noted, taking up the majority of the flavour. In the background there were hints of lingonberry and lemon peel. The fruit intensity was quite high, but this slowly faded to leave a big sour note on the tongue. Carbonation seemed to be medium to high which helped carry the flavours somewhat.
I thought this was ok, but it honestly didn’t blow me away. I wondering if some of the bolder notes may have faded after five years, leaving a more acidic beer in its place. It was nice to sample this, but this is very much a sharing bottle between friends.
