Founded in 2014, Kvarnagårdens Bryggeri is found just north of Växjö. This is Belgian style wheat beer, known as a witbier, as it is brewed with coriander for added herbal aroma and taste. Wheat beer is an often-overlooked style by Swedish brewers, with less than 70 present in Systembolaget today. Kvarnagårdens were one of the first breweries to get a license for gårdsförsäljning in their area and I felt like they would be the perfect brewery to represent Kronoberg on this journey around Sweden.
This poured with a light yellow hue and a very large and persistent white head helped by the high carbonation. The floral, citrus and light banana notes were at the forefront of the aroma however unfortunately a few people commented that there was also a hint of sweetcorn which was unexpected. When sipped, banana and cloves were subtle yet present, with a slightly oily body and again high carbonation noted on the tongue. The lemon note was also a minor note in the taste, adding a hint of freshness that came through in the aftertaste.
If I’m honest I thought this was OK but nothing more than that. Overall, it was a nice and easy to drink wheat beer but unfortunately nothing that blew me away. The hint of sweetcorn added an unwanted negative but apart from that all the components were right. I just wanted slightly more, and it didn’t quite deliver.
