Hyllie Bryggeri was started by founder Michael in a garage in 2015, before evolving into a viable business in 2019 with the addition of Erik to the company. Experience brewer Johan joined in 2020, and they have continued to grow since, now producing 250,000L of beer annually and have become Malmö’s biggest craft brewery. Theyalso run two separate locations: a taproom and a bistro. This beer was released to celebrate their 10-year anniversary. As we were only trying beers from 7 counties in this tasting, I knew I would have to have two beers from one of the counties. Hyllie has forged a reputation for quality beers, and I really wanted a stout in the tasting, so this seemed like the perfect way to end the tasting.

This was deep dark chocolate brown to black with a mocha colour head that held for a fair amount of time. Smoke, sweet liquorice, oak and tar bought an intense and interesting blend of aromas to this stout. These all continued through into the taste, with a big bitter cacao note overriding them all. These continued long into the aftertaste, leaving the mouth feeling dry and warmed. There was also a hint of iron in the background, but not enough to cause a negative effect to the beer. The only negative I could really spot was that I was surprised that were wasn’t a big maple hit here like the name suggested. In fact, the maple notes were pretty much non existent. The beer was lovely, but I still would have liked that edge to come through as it was promised by the name.

This was a great stout. Bold flavours and an intricate aroma, I had a lot of fun drinking this. As stated, I would have liked a maple edge to be present but apart from that it was great. Well worth the money.
