Elmeleven Brewing is based in Arlöv, just outside of Malmö, and specialize in fruit forward, adjunct-heavy sours, particularly their “PULP” series like this one. They began in 2019 and operate as part of Molecule Brewing, a brewing collective founded by Elmeleven, Chad Beer, and Nerdbrewing to share equipment and resources. This sour has a massive amount of blackcurrant, blueberry and blackberry purée added to it, along with chocolate essence (I presume, no data available). I have featured Elmeleven in a number of tastings recently because they are producing amazing beer after amazing beer right now. There was no choice when I went to pick the brewery that would represent Skåne on this little trip around Southern Sweden, and once again they have produced an amazing beer.
Just like nearly every sour beer I’ve tried from Elmeleven, this was incredibly thick to the point it would be considered a smoothie. This is packed full of purée, with some guests commenting it is almost like a Proviva yoghurt in consistency. When swirled it left a thick coating around the inside of the glass with zero head forming on the smoothie like purple body. The blackcurrant and cacao aromas both exploded from the glass and smelt extremely inviting. Upon sipping, the frothy like body completely coated the tongue and enveloped it in a massive fruity layer. The blackcurrant was tart yet balanced with the milk chocolate notes well. The purple fruit continues after swallowing, leaving the mouth sticky but wish for another sip straight away.
This was an absolute beast of a sour and another winner from one of the most exciting breweries in Sweden today. I cannot stress enough that you need to check this brewery out. Although the cans are a bit of the expensive side, you can taste where that extra cost is coming from. Simply amazing.
