Founded in February 2009 by Pierre Tilquin, Gueuzerie Tilquin is the only gueuze blendery in Wallonia, in the Senne Valley of Belgium. They produce spontaneously fermented lambic blends, using wort sourced from producers like Boon, Lindemans, Girardin, and Cantillon. For only the second time in a tasting, I decided to buy a mix pack for one of the beers in a tasting. Numbers were randomly assigned to guests, and they received a sample from that bottle, so people on the same table all received different beers at once. The beers in the mix pack were:
1. Mûre (6.0%): Fresh blackberries fermented in lambic, then blended with aged lambic.
2. Quetsche (6.4%): Destoned purple plums (Quetsche) fermented with blended with aged lambic.
3. Rullquin (7.0%): A base sour blend, typically combining lambic with elderberry or similar elements.
4. Cassis Rullquin (7.7%) : Combines lambic with blackcurrant
5. Pinot Meunier (PMeunier) (7.9%): Wine grape lambic made in collaboration with Domaine W; fermented with Pinot Meunier grapes.
6. Saison Lambic Fruits des Bois (7.5%): A Saison-style lambic mixed with forest fruits; is also a collaborative brew with Nanobrasserie de l’Ermitage.
On the night, I tried a sample from bottle 6, and I enjoyed it as it was slightly less intense than some of the others. After the tasting, I got to try a small sample from the rest of the selection. I struggled with the samples from bottles 3 and 4 because of how strong the acidity was. But for those of you who love your Belgian lambics, this would be an amazing box to try.
