Elmeleven Brewing is based in Arlöv, just outside of Malmö, and specialize in fruit-forward, adjunct-heavy sours, particularly their ”PULP” series like this one. They began in 2019 and operate as part of Molecule Brewing, a brewing collective founded by Elmeleven, Chad Beer, and Nerdbrewing to share equipment and resources. This has been made with banana, guava and passion fruit. I have been a big fan of this brewery ever since trying a few of their beers at home, and I finally managed to get one of their beers into a tasting! But was it as good as I thought it would be? Oh, yes indeed.
This was an extremely thick smoothie beer indeed, with a dull red colour and next to no head at all. The aroma was bursting with fruit, with big banana notes blending delightfully with the intense passion fruit. The guava was bringing up the rear, but mango was also detected strongly in the aroma. As I sipped this, my first thought was “wow!” as this was one of the thickest beers I’ve tasted this year. This beer is all about the fruit cocktail, with the heavy banana giving a heavy body and sweetness. It would be easy for this to taste artificial, but you could easily believe this was a fresh fruit smoothie that has just been blended in front of you. The aftertaste was soft and lingered for a fair amount of time.
This was simply amazing. It was a massive beer and overwhelmed the senses in the best way possible. It might be hard to drink many of these in one session, but that’s not the idea behind this beer. On its own, this beer is a triumph and I enjoyed every sip. Track it down as soon if you can!
